Privacy Policy

Last updated: August 3, 2026

Introduction

Meteo Lombardia (the "App") is developed and operated by Matteo Crippa ("we", "us", "our"). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our mobile application, together with a detailed description of the third-party data the App presents.

The App is an Italian-language weather companion for Lombardy. It turns raw meteorological data into conversational, human-friendly advice: a "Today" dashboard (current conditions, 12-hour outlook, gear suggestions, air quality and pollen), a "Weekend" escape recommender that scans curated Lombardy day-trip destinations, a live rain radar map, and local rain alerts. Privacy is a core design principle — the App has no account, no analytics, and no backend of ours; the only data it ever sends out is your approximate coordinates to the third-party services it queries for weather information.

By using the App, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy.

Information We Collect

Location Data

The App uses your device's approximate location to fetch weather, air quality, and radar data for your area and to rank weekend destinations by distance. Location processing is minimal:

If you deny location permission, the App falls back to a default Lombardy location so core features still work.

Information We Do NOT Collect

We do not collect, store, or share:

How We Use Your Information

Legal Basis for Processing

Under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), we process your personal information on the following legal basis:

Your location is used only to obtain the information you asked the App for (the weather where you are). It is not retained, combined, or used for any other purpose. Since we operate no backend, no other legal basis for processing applies.

How We Share Your Information

We do not sell, trade, or share your personal information with anyone. The App never sends data to any server we operate.

Third-Party Services and Data Sources

The App is a thin client over public, third-party weather services. It does not generate its own weather data. Everything you see in the App originates from the providers below:

ServiceWhat the App Uses It ForData Sent
Open-Meteo Forecast API (api.open-meteo.com)All weather forecasts: the Today dashboard, the Weekend recommender, and the rain alerts. The App reads three numerical models through Open-Meteo: MeteoSwiss ICON (recommended, seamless), ItaliaMeteo / ARPAE ICON-2I (Italian regional model, ~2 km resolution), and DWD ICON (German global model).Approximate latitude/longitude + requested forecast parameters
Open-Meteo Air Quality API (air-quality-api.open-meteo.com)Air quality index (AQI), PM2.5/PM10, ozone, and pollen counts displayed in the Today dashboard. Data originates from the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS).Approximate latitude/longitude + requested air quality variables
RainViewer (api.rainviewer.com, tiles via tilecache.rainviewer.com)The live rain radar map and animation. RainViewer composites radar networks across Europe (including the MeteoSwiss Swiss radar network) and provides a free public, keyless API.None (public catalog); standard HTTP headers only
Apple MapKitBasemap for the radar map and for displaying weekend destinations.Your approximate coordinates (resolved on-device for map rendering)
Apple Geocoder (CLGeocoder)Reverse-geocodes your position into a friendly town name shown in the messages.Your approximate coordinates (sent to Apple's geocoding service)
Local NotificationsRain alerts (up to 48 h ahead) with a lead time you choose.None — scheduling happens entirely on-device

Attribution and licenses of the data providers: Open-Meteo (CC BY 4.0, free for non-commercial use), RainViewer, MeteoSwiss / geo.admin.ch, CAMS (Copernicus), and Apple Maps. The App is non-commercial.

The App contains no third-party analytics, crash reporting, advertising, or tracking SDKs. Specifically: no Firebase, no Sentry, no Crashlytics, no Google Analytics, no Amplitude, no Mixpanel, no AdMob, no social media SDKs, no payment processors, no remote push notifications (all notifications are local), and no remote configuration or A/B testing frameworks.

Data Disclaimer

Please read this section carefully.

Third-party data. All weather forecasts, radar imagery, air quality values, and pollen counts shown in the App are provided by third-party services (Open-Meteo, MeteoSwiss, ItaliaMeteo/ARPAE, DWD, CAMS, and RainViewer) and are model outputs — estimates, not measurements or guarantees. Meteorological models are probabilistic, update frequently, and can disagree with one another or with reality, especially at long ranges and in rapidly evolving conditions.

Automated advice. The conversational messages, gear suggestions (umbrella, jacket, sunglasses, and similar), and weekend destination recommendations are generated automatically by simple rule-based logic applied to the model data described above. They are not professional meteorological, health, or travel advice. They may differ from official forecasts or from what actually happens, and they should never be the only basis for decisions that affect your safety, health, or travel plans.

Air quality and pollen. Air quality index and pollen values are model estimates and may not reflect local conditions. They are informational only and must not be treated as medical or health advice.

Safety. The App is not a severe-weather warning service. In case of storms, floods, heatwaves, avalanches, or any potentially dangerous weather, always consult the official sources: ARPA Lombardia, MeteoSwiss, the Italian Civil Protection (Protezione Civile), and the local authorities. Mountain excursions in particular must be planned against official mountain-weather reports.

Limitation of liability. To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, we are not liable for any loss or damage arising from your reliance on the data or the automated advice shown in the App, including decisions to postpone, change, or undertake activities based on it. The App is provided "as is" and without warranty of accuracy, completeness, or timeliness.

Cookies and Tracking Technologies

The App does not use cookies or any form of tracking technology. There are no web views, no cookie storage, and no fingerprinting mechanisms.

Data Security

All network requests to the data providers use HTTPS. Location is read at coarse (kilometer) accuracy, used only for the query, and never stored by us. Because the App operates no backend and stores no personal data, there is no server-side data that could be breached.

No system is 100% secure, but because no personal data leaves your device beyond a coarse coordinate query, the exposure is minimal.

Data Retention

All app data is stored locally on your device and is removed when you uninstall the App:

DataStorageRetention
Last fetched forecast / air qualityLocal cache on deviceReplaced on next refresh; removed on uninstall
Radar frame cacheLocal cache on deviceEvicted automatically (stale frames dropped); removed on uninstall
App preferences (personality, model, alert settings)UserDefaultsUntil changed; removed on uninstall

We store nothing on any server, so there is nothing for us to retain or delete.

Your Rights

Under GDPR and applicable privacy laws, you have the following rights:

To exercise any of these rights, contact us using the information below. We will respond within the timeframe required by applicable law.

International Data Transfers

When you use the App, your coarse coordinates are sent to the data providers described above. Open-Meteo and RainViewer operate international infrastructure, and Apple's geocoding and Maps services are operated by Apple. Each provider processes data under its own privacy policy and, where relevant, its Data Privacy Framework or Standard Contractual Clauses commitments. No personal data is otherwise transferred across borders.

Children's Privacy

The App is not intended for children under 13 (or the applicable age threshold in your jurisdiction). We do not knowingly collect any personal information from children — in fact, we do not collect personal information from any user regardless of age.

Apple Privacy Manifest

The App includes a PrivacyInfo.xcprivacy file that declares:

Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated "Last updated" date. For material changes, we may provide additional notice through the application.

Governing Law

This policy is governed by the laws of Italy. The following privacy laws apply to our processing of your data:

Jurisdiction-specific rights (CCPA, CPRA, etc.) for users outside the EU are acknowledged; however, because we collect no personal data, no additional compliance measures are triggered.
