Introduction

Unfold (the "App") is developed and operated by Matteo Crippa ("we", "us", "our"). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our application.

The App is a break reminder that lives in your Mac's menu bar. It keeps a countdown to your next break and shows a full-screen overlay when it is time to stand up. Privacy is a core design principle — the App requires no account, has no server, collects no personal data, and runs entirely on your Mac.

By using the App, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy.

Information We Collect

We do not collect personal information such as your name, email address, or phone number, and the App requires no account, sign-in, or registration.

What the App Reads on Your Mac

The App reads a small amount of system state to do its job. None of it identifies you, and none of it leaves your Mac:

Idle time: a single number — the seconds since your last keyboard or mouse activity (the same idle-time value macOS itself reports). The App reads it to tell working time from idle time, so a break is not earned while you are away. It is read fresh each second, never stored, never attributed to any application, and never transmitted. No permission is required to read it.
The frontmost application's bundle identifier (for example us.zoom.xos) and your display configuration (how many displays you have and whether they are mirrored). The App uses these only to recognise that you are in a call or presenting, so a break can wait. It reads bundle identifiers, never window titles, and never the content of anything on your screen.
Focus status: whether a Focus or Do Not Disturb session is active, so breaks stay quiet while you are concentrating. The App reads this only if you grant Focus-status authorization, which it asks for — opt-in, never at launch — after your first completed break. It learns only that a Focus is active, not which one.

Information Stored on Your Mac

The App stores the following locally, in your Mac's own application settings storage:

Your chosen interval — how many minutes of work precede a break (15, 30, 45, 60, or 90 minutes, or a custom length from 5 to 240 minutes)
Timer state — the remaining time, the snooze count, and the current break's deadline, so an in-progress break survives a restart
Your schedule — the working-hours window during which breaks are allowed
Your preferences — whether the break chime plays, whether the App starts at login, whether notifications are enabled, and whether every display is used for the break overlay

All of it is removed when you delete the App.

What Leaves Your Mac

Nothing. The App contains no networking code. It does not upload, transmit, synchronise, or share anything — not your settings, not your idle time, not which applications you use, not analytics, not crash reports.

Information We Do NOT Collect

We do not collect, store, or share:

Name, email, phone number, or any contact information belonging to you
Accounts or credentials — the App does not require sign-in or registration
Which applications you use, what you do in them, or any usage history
Window titles, screenshots, or the content of your screen
Device identifiers (IDFA, advertising ID, vendor ID, etc.)
Your IP address (we do not log, receive, or store it — the App never contacts us)
Location data or GPS coordinates
Usage analytics, crash reports, telemetry, or diagnostics
Advertising or marketing data
Cookies, web views, or fingerprinting
Payment or financial information — the App is free, with no in-app purchases

How the App Works

The App is a countdown timer that runs in your menu bar. For each interval, entirely on your device:

It accumulates the time you are actively using your Mac, using the idle-time value described above
It withholds breaks while you are in a call, presenting, screen-mirrored, in a Focus session, or away from your Mac
When your interval is complete, it shows a full-screen overlay asking you to stand up, with a countdown that completes the break on its own
You can snooze the break (up to three times, five minutes each) or dismiss it with one click

How We Use Your Information

To operate the break timer on your device
To remember your interval, schedule, and preferences
To decide when a break should be withheld (calls, presentations, Focus, idle time)

We do not use your information for advertising, profiling, marketing, or any purpose unrelated to the App's functionality. We do not sell your information.

Legal Basis for Processing

Under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), we rely on the following legal bases:

Legitimate interest (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR) — Operating the break timer on your device. All processing is local to your Mac and no personal data is transmitted to us.
Consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR) — Reading your Focus status and sending optional notifications. Both are opt-in: Focus-status authorization is requested only after your first completed break, and notifications are sent only if you enable them in the App's settings. You may withdraw either at any time (see Your Rights).

How We Share Your Information

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information, and no personal data is collected. There is no personal data to share.

We may disclose information only if required to do so by law or in response to valid legal process. In the unlikely event of a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, no personal user data would be transferred because no personal user data is collected.

Third-Party Services

The App contains no third-party analytics, crash reporting, advertising, or tracking SDKs. Specifically: no Firebase, no Sentry, no Crashlytics, no Google Analytics, no Amplitude, no Mixpanel, no AdMob, no social media SDKs, no payment processors, and no remote configuration or A/B testing frameworks.

The App has no networking capability, so it is not able to make network requests at all.

If you download the App from the Mac App Store, Apple processes the download and any future updates as part of the store transaction; that is governed by Apple's own privacy practices, not by this policy. The App itself transmits nothing to Apple.

Cookies and Tracking Technologies

The App uses no cookies and no form of tracking technology. There are no web views, no cookie storage, no advertising identifiers, and no fingerprinting mechanisms.

Data Security

We implement the following measures to protect your information:

On-device processing: idle time, timer state, and preferences never leave your Mac
No network capability: the App ships with no networking code, so it cannot transmit data even if it wanted to
Data minimisation: the App stores only your settings and the current timer state
No personal data at rest: because nothing is transmitted, there is no personal data on any server of ours to breach

No system is 100% secure, but because no personal data leaves your device, there is no personal data on our servers to breach.

Because nothing is transmitted to us, there is no retention period to state on any server. Deleting the App removes everything it owns.

Your Rights

Under GDPR and applicable privacy laws, you have the following rights:

Access, correction, deletion — All data about you resides on your Mac. You can change every setting from the App's own settings window, and delete everything by uninstalling the App
Withdraw consent — Disable notifications in the App's settings (and in System Settings > Notifications), or revoke Focus-status authorization in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Focus
Restrict processing — Turn the App off, snooze a break, or pause the timer; it remains installed and re-enablable
Object — You may object to processing by ceasing use of the App
Lodge a complaint — You have the right to lodge a complaint with the Italian Data Protection Authority (Garante per la protezione dei dati personali) or your local supervisory authority

To exercise any of these rights, contact us using the information below. We will respond within the timeframe required by applicable law.

International Data Transfers

Not applicable. No personal data is transmitted to us or to any third party, so no data is transferred across borders.

Children's Privacy

The App is not intended for children under 13 (or the applicable age threshold in your jurisdiction). We do not knowingly collect any personal information from children — in fact, we do not collect personal information from any user regardless of age.

Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated "Last updated" date. For material changes, we may provide additional notice through the application.

Governing Law

This policy is governed by the laws of Italy. The following privacy laws apply to our processing of your data:

Jurisdiction-specific rights (CCPA, CPRA, etc.) for users outside the EU are acknowledged; however, because we collect no personal data and do not sell data, no additional compliance measures are triggered.
